Part/Chapter 15: He’s Not What You Think!

“Hey, Jonathan. I heard that football team’s coming together.” A young man said to his cousin (the same boy that had warned Zero about Hiruma in chapter 1).  His cousin, a boy with dirty blonde hair and dark brown eyes, scowled.

“That guy’s a nut.” He said.

“I heard that there’s a girl on the team too. As a wide receiver.” Jonathan growled.

“That girl must be insane.”

“She’s dating the Quarter back.” Jonathan sputtered.

“SHE’S WHAT!? HE’LL KILL HER!!”

“Jonathan, calm down.”

“DON’T TELL ME TO CALM DOWN, MACE! Why did you bring up the football team anyway?” He asked, staring at his cousin.

“I’m gonna try to join.” He said simply. Jonathan stared at him in pure shock.

“You…want to join that psycho’s team?” He asked slowly.

“Well yeah. I met his apprentice, Ian, and he seemed like a nice enough kid.  So I decided to try out.”

“Just because the apprentice is nice doesn’t mean that he himself is nice.” Mace rolled his eyes.

“Why don’t you try out too?  I know you enjoy football as much as I do.” Jonathan was quiet for a moment.

“Fine. But I’m pulling you out as soon as Hiruma starts hurting anybody.” Mace sighed.

“Fine.”

“MOVE IT SLOW POKES!!” Zero yelled as she watched the team run around the field. “We have five days until our first game! COME ON!”

Hiruma, who had finished his laps, walked to her.

“We still need two more receivers…”

“I know that’s what bothers me…” Zero told him. “Our last tryouts didn’t give us any receivers. As much as I hate to say it, I think Ian and I are the only ones other than Ranger who can handle your throws…”

“Hey!”  Zero blinked and turned to see Jonathan and Mace approach them.  Mace walked up smiling. “I’d like to try out for the team!”

“Um okay what are your strengths?” Zero asked, already thinking that they weren’t going to find a new player.

“I’m good a catching.” Zero and Hiruma stared at him as if he was a godsend.

“Are you serious…?”

“Um yeah. Is…that a problem?” Mace asked.  Zero instantly hugged him.

“YOU’RE LIKE A SAVIOR FROM HEAVEN!!!” She yelled. Hiruma pried her off the kid.

“Jeez, don’t kill him!” He said, Zero smiled at her boyfriend.

“But we needed a receiver or two and now we have one!”

“Shouldn’t we test him out first?” Hiruma suggested.

“Ah! You’re right!” Zero said, looking rather confused. “Can’t believe I forgot about that…” She wandered off to gather her thoughts.

“Um what’s with her?” Mace asked Hiruma.

“She gets like this when I drag her out of bed in the morning. I call this her ‘Flippy’ mode.” He said, grinning. Jonathan looked nervous.

“You drag her out of bed?”  He asked.

“Only when she refuses to pick up her phone and ignores the knocks on the door.”

“So you just barge in?!”

“Heck no. She’d kill me. Alex lets me in.” He said. “Devil Dog! Run a lap or two! That’ll wake you up.”  Zero glanced at him and nodded before running off.  Hiruma grinned at her and turned back to Jonathan and Mace. Jonathan noticed the grin and watched him closely.

“So what now?” Mace asked.

“Well let’s do some passing and see how good you are with catching.” Hiruma said, grabbing some gloves. “Here. I can throw pretty hard and I don’t need my newest guy getting injured.”  Mace grinned and took the gloves from him.

“Thanks man.” Jonathan looked surprised. Where was the evil guy HE had met?  Hiruma gave Mace an evil grin.

“You ready? I’m going to do a rapid fire.”  Mace nodded and ran to the other side of the field.  The others on the team paused from their laps to watch Hiruma and Mace practice. Jonathan watched as Hiruma started throwing the rapid-fire balls that he was well known for during practice.  Zero smiled as Mace caught every ball that was thrown at him.  Hiruma’s grin was getting wider and wider as Mace showed off his skills.  Suddenly he stopped. “Damn this is the last ball.”

“I’ll gather them up!” Ian declared running to the field and gathering up as many balls as he could.  He ran back to Hiruma and placed the footballs at Hiruma’s feet.  Hiruma grinned and roughed up Ian’s hair, gently.

“Good kid.” Jonathan watched this before thinking.  Hiruma wasn’t acting as mean as he thought he was.  Mace started catching the balls again, not missing a one.  Hiruma grinned. “YA HA!!! WE GOT OURSELVES A RECEIVER!!!!”

“YA HA!!” The team declared, celebrating happily. Ian ran to Mace and hugged him.

“You’re in! You’re in!” He declared happily.  Hiruma grinned.

“HEADS UP!” He declared, throwing a ball at them.  Before either boys could catch, Jonathan caught it with one hand.  This surprised the team.  He looked at Hiruma.

“I think I might like to give this a try.” He said. “Care to try me out?”  Mace smiled happily.

“JONATHAN! YOU MEAN IT?!”

“Yep.”  Mace celebrated with Ian as Jonathan walked to Hiruma.

“Tell me the truth.  Do you really care about them as much as you seem to?” He whispered.

“…Ian’s big brother lives a long way from here. Plus Ransom has never had anyone look out for him.”  Hiruma glanced at him. “You do the math.” Jonathan grinned.

“Math’s never been my thing.  Let’s play ball.”

End of Chapter/Part 15

Note: Jonathan ended up making the team, just so you know.
Kinda short. It's late and I'm dead tired.

Anyway, enjoy the chapter.
